The Symbol Dawn
It was the hour before the God's awake.
Across the path of the divine Event...
A power of fallen boundless self awake...
As in a dark beginning of all things...
The impassive skies were neutral, empty, still...
A throe that came and left a quivering trace...
It was as though even in the Nought's profound...
An unshaped consciousness desired Light...
As if a childlike finger laid on a cheek...
Arrived from the other side of boundlessness...
Intervening in a mindless universe...
A thought was sown in the unsounded Void...
All can be done if the God-touch is there.
A hope stole in that hardly dared to be...
A wandering hand of pale enchanted light...
A clamour from the unreached transcendences...
Almost that day the epiphany was disclosed...
Once she half looked behind for her veiled sun...
Here where our half-lit ignorance skirts the gulfs...
A sacred yearning lingered in its trace...
The message ceased and waned the messenger...
And Savitri too awoke among these tribes...
In her there was the anguish of the gods...
In vain now seemed the splendid sacrifice...
Inflicting on the heights the abysm's law...
A fire has come and touched men's hearts and gone...
A dark foreknowledge separated her...
Even in this moment of her soul's despair...
At first life grieved not in her burdened breast...
The Power that kindles mind was still withdrawn...
Her house of Nature felt an unseen sway...
All the fierce question of man's hours relived...
